The cost of a fireplace depends on what you are buying: a surround, a complete suite, an individual fire or stove, or a fully installed feature. A replacement electric stove and a bespoke marble fireplace are very different purchases, even though both might be described as a “new fireplace”.
For example, Bonfire’s advertised prices include a limestone surround at £795, a gas fire at £896, a wood burning stove at £1,559 and a freestanding electric stove at £1,699. These are product prices, not complete installation costs.
This guide separates the options, with real product examples and installed project budgets to help you work out what you need.

What do you mean by a fireplace?
Before comparing prices, decide which of these you need.
| What you are buying | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fireplace surround | The decorative frame around the opening, usually comprising two legs and a mantel shelf |
| Fireplace suite | A package of specified components, such as a surround, hearth and slips or back panel; some suites also include a fire |
| Fire or stove only | The wood burning, gas, electric or bioethanol appliance |
| Complete installed fireplace | The products, preparation and installation work detailed in a quotation |
| Media wall | A feature incorporating a fire, usually with a television and optional shelving, cabinetry or lighting |
“Complete suite” does not necessarily mean the fire or installation is included. Always check the component list rather than relying on the photograph.
How much does a fireplace surround cost?
Budget around £500 upwards for a wooden fireplace surround, £800 upwards for Aegean or Portuguese limestone, and £1,200 upwards for selected natural marble designs. These are supply-only guide prices: the fire, hearth, adjoining stonework and installation may cost extra.
For an initial budget, allow approximately £1,200 for a standard limestone surround or £2,000 for a natural marble surround. These are useful planning figures rather than UK market averages. Larger sizes, premium materials and more intricate designs can cost considerably more.
Here are four examples from Bonfire’s range:
| Fireplace surround | Supply-only price, including VAT |
|---|---|
| Beckford 48″ Aegean limestone | £795 |
| Abingdon 46″ Portuguese limestone | £1,180 |
| Victorian Classic 48″ Carrara marble | £1,220 |
| Pimlico 54″ Lilac Viola marble | £1,985 |
Advertised prices checked in October 2026. Prices may change, and additional options can affect the total.

What else should you budget for?
A surround frames the fireplace opening. Unless the listing states otherwise, it does not include the hearth, back panel, slips, appliance or fitting.
Depending on the design, allow these additional planning amounts:
| Component | Indicative supply-only budget |
|---|---|
| Stone slip set | Around £300 upwards |
| Stone back panel | Around £600 upwards |
| Front hearth | Around £300 upwards |
| Rear hearth | Around £300 upwards |
Slips are strips of stone that bridge the gap between the surround and the fire or chamber. A back panel fills the opening behind the surround, usually with a cut-out for an inset fire. You would normally specify one arrangement or the other.
A stove installed within a fireplace chamber may need a rear hearth beneath the appliance and a front hearth extending into the room. These can be separate sections or a suitable combined design. The dimensions, material and construction must suit the appliance.
For example, a £1,200 surround, £300 slip set and two £300 hearth sections total £2,100 before the appliance and installation. This illustrates how the finished fireplace can cost substantially more than the surround alone.
Why do some surrounds cost more?
The main differences are the stone selected, the size of the surround and the work involved in making it. Deep mouldings, carved details and carefully matched marble veining can increase the price.
Natural marble surrounds also vary in construction. Some use thinner stone sections assembled into a hollow profile; others have substantial solid stone components. A solid stone surround usually still arrives in several pieces, such as the legs, lintel and mantel shelf.
Many standard natural marble designs fall within a £1,200–£4,000 supply-only budget. Substantial solid stone designs can start around £3,000, while exceptional materials and bespoke work can cost much more. These ranges overlap: construction alone does not determine the price.
Bespoke dimensions require a separate quotation. A straightforward size alteration may add around 20–30% to the standard price, but a new design, unusual stone or extensive carving can increase the cost considerably further.
Is micro marble a cheaper alternative?
Micro marble is an engineered material made from crushed marble and resin. It offers a more consistent appearance and can be an affordable alternative to natural marble.
It is commonly specified for electric fires and selected gas installations. Do not assume it is suitable for a wood burner or other solid-fuel appliance: check the surround manufacturer’s specification for the proposed fire and installation.
For a wood-burning fireplace, honed slate is a practical hearth option because its dark finish makes soot and everyday marks less conspicuous than pale limestone. The hearth still needs to be correctly specified for heat exposure.

See the Mayfair fireplace project for an example of a complete fireplace installation.
Check the dimensions before ordering
The mantel width is only one measurement. Check the opening width and height, overall surround dimensions and rebate—the space behind the surround that accommodates a back panel, slips or insert.
Standard sizes can offer good value when they fit the proposed fireplace. Bespoke dimensions are useful where the appliance, chimney breast or room proportions require a different arrangement.
How much does a complete fireplace suite cost?
A suite can simplify choosing matching components, but the contents vary.
For example, the Faro 54″ Bella Creme limestone fireplace suite is advertised at £1,380.24 on promotion, including the standard hearth and slips. The fire and installation are separate.

An electric fireplace suite may include the appliance as well as the decorative housing. A stone suite may contain only the stone components.

Before buying, confirm:
- Whether the fire is included.
- Which hearth, slips or back panel are supplied.
- Whether the standard sizes suit your installation.
- Whether selected upgrades change the price.
- Whether delivery and fitting are included.
A suite price and a surround only price should therefore never be compared without checking what each contains.
How much does a log burner cost?
For the stove alone, allow approximately £500 – £1,000 for a budget model, £1,000 – £2,500 for a mid range stove, or £2,500 – £6,000 and upwards for a premium design. Installation, the flue system and hearth are additional costs.
The table below gives examples from Bonfire’s range. These price bands are a budgeting guide: a manufacturer may offer models across several bands.
| Price range | Stove example | Advertised stove-only price, including VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Budget: £500–£1,000 | ACR Woodpecker WP4 | £611 sale price |
| Budget: £500–£1,000 | ACR Woodpecker WP5 multi-fuel stove | £708 sale price |
| Mid-range: £1,000–£2,500 | Charnwood Aire 4 Low Stand | £1,559 |
| Mid-range: £1,000–£2,500 | Contura 210 | £1,595 |
| Mid-range: £1,000–£2,500 | Charnwood Aire 400 Smart | £2,159 |
| Premium: £2,500–£6,000+ | Barbas BOX 20 70 | £3,186 |

| Premium: £2,500–£6,000+ | Stûv 30-UP wall-mounted stove | £5,906 |
Advertised prices checked in October 2026. Sale prices may end, and colours, stands, log stores and other options can increase the total.
Budget log burners
A budget stove can be a practical choice for a straightforward fireplace installation. The Woodpecker WP4 is a compact wood burner, while the Woodpecker 5 offers a larger viewing window and multi-fuel capability.

When comparing lower-priced stoves, check the warranty, replacement glass and firebrick costs, spare-parts availability and who provides aftercare. These details matter when the stove needs servicing or repairs.
Watch our Woodpecker stove video: “The Best Budget Wood Burning Stove?” for a closer look.
Mid range log burners
This budget gives you a wider choice of designs, controls and finishes.
Charnwood stoves are designed and manufactured on the Isle of Wight. The Aire 4 is a compact option with a wide fire view; the Aire 400 Smart adds automatic airflow control.

The Contura 210 is another option worth comparing, particularly if a large glass window is a priority. Different bases and door options let you adapt its appearance to the fireplace or room.
Premium log burners
Premium stoves often offer larger viewing windows, distinctive proportions, wall-mounted designs or integrated log storage. Models from Barbas and Stûv can become a central feature of the room, with the hearth and flue incorporated into the overall design.

The Barbas BOX 20 70 and Stûv 16-H 68 examples above are advertised as made to order with estimated 4–6 week lead times. Confirm the timescale for your chosen specification before scheduling installation.
A higher price does not automatically mean better efficiency or a more suitable stove. Compare the individual model’s tested performance, controls, warranty and service support. Heat output must suit the room: buying a larger stove than you need can make it difficult to run comfortably.
What does installation add?
The stove price is only part of the project. Depending on the property, installation may require:
- A suitable chimney and flue liner, or an insulated twin-wall flue system.
- A correctly specified hearth.
- Work to open, repair or line the fireplace chamber.
- Ventilation, fitting, commissioning and finishing work.
A beam or stone surround is an optional design feature, rather than something every installation needs.

Wood burner installation examples
Bonfire’s selected installed offers provide these reference points:
| Installation | Advertised offer price |
|---|---|
| Selected stove and flexible flue installation for a suitable existing chimney | £1,795 |
| Selected stove and external twin wall flue installation for a suitable single storey property | £3,595 |
| Selected stove and external twin wall flue installation for a suitable two storey property | £3,995 |
These offers have their own appliance and installation specifications. They do not automatically include the Charnwood models mentioned above. Hearths, building work and remedial work may be extra, and suitability must be confirmed.

How much does a gas fire cost?
The Gazco Logic HE Winchester conventional flue gas fire is advertised at £896 on promotion for the starting configuration. Front, fuel bed and control options can affect the price.
That is the appliance price. It does not cover a new surround, hearth or installation.

The fitted cost depends on the existing fireplace, gas supply, chimney or flue, and the chosen appliance. Replacing a fire in a suitable opening is a different job from creating a new built-in gas fireplace.

Bonfire quotes gas installations individually, with fitting carried out by our Gas Safe registered engineers. The appliance and flue arrangement should be established before the decorative fireplace is ordered.
How much does an electric fire or stove cost?
Electric appliances range from freestanding stoves to wide built-in fires. The installation work depends on how the appliance will be used.
| Electric appliance | Advertised supply price | What the price covers |
|---|---|---|
| British Fires Hinton | £1,699 | Electric stove in the advertised configuration |
| British Fires New Forest 1200 | £1,899 | Built-in electric fire in the advertised starting configuration |
The New Forest price is for the fire, not a complete media wall. Different editions, glass options and finishing accessories can increase the appliance price.

A freestanding electric stove may need relatively little preparation in a suitable location. A recessed fire can require wall construction, electrical provision and finishing. Both must be positioned and installed according to their manufacturer’s instructions.

Our electric fire installation service can help you compare the complete cost of each approach.
How much does a bioethanol fireplace cost?
Bioethanol products include individual burners, fire baskets, freestanding stoves and built-in features. It is particularly important to check whether the price covers the burner alone or the whole appliance.
| Bioethanol product | Advertised supply price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Decoflame Denver F3 620mm | £2,839 | Burner; selected accessories and surrounding construction are extra |
| Chesneys Alchemy FB18 | £2,889 | FB18 MK4 burner only; basket and log options are additional |
| Chesneys Salisbury 5 Bioethanol Stove | £3,995 | Bioethanol stove; fireplace alterations or installation services are separate |
Although these appliances do not need a conventional chimney or flue, the room and installation still need to meet the manufacturer’s requirements for ventilation, positioning and clearances.

For a built-in design, budget for the enclosure, suitable surrounding materials and any required electrical provision as well as the burner. Fuel is also an ongoing cost, separate from the purchase price.

How much does a complete media wall cost?
Bonfire’s media wall buying guide gives an indicative £2,500–£6,000 budget for many professionally installed electric media wall projects. More elaborate specifications can cost more.
The complete price depends on:
- The electric fire and selected upgrades.
- Wall construction and finishing.
- Electrical work and cable routes.
- Shelving, cabinetry and lighting.
- Television mounting and access for maintenance.
Confirm whether the television, soundbar, decoration and other equipment are included. A fire sold as a “media wall fire” is usually just the appliance unless a package explicitly states otherwise.

View the Newbury media wall installation for the project details. The photograph illustrates the design, rather than a fixed-price package.
What does it cost to replace an existing fireplace?
The cost depends on how much can be retained.
Replacing a surround may leave the existing appliance in place, provided everything is compatible. Replacing the whole fireplace can involve removal, a new hearth and interior, chimney work and repairs to the surrounding wall or floor.
Before requesting a quote, decide whether you want to:
- Keep the existing fire and change its surround.
- Replace the appliance within the existing fireplace.
- Change fuel type.
- Remove everything and create a new feature.
Our fireplace renovation service can help establish which parts are suitable to retain.
What should a fireplace installation quote include?
A useful quotation makes the products and work clear. Check for:
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Appliance | Exact model, fuel type and selected options |
| Fireplace components | Surround, hearth, slips, back panel or chamber |
| Preparation | Removal, disposal and opening alterations |
| Connections | Chimney, flue, gas and electrical work where required |
| Finishing | Plastering, floor repairs and whether decoration is included |
| Installation | Labour, commissioning and applicable certification |
| Other costs | Delivery, access equipment, surveys and VAT |
| Aftercare | Product warranty and workmanship cover |
Tell the installer about stairs, restricted parking or difficult access. These can affect the handling of heavy stone and appliances.
Ask how unforeseen work will be agreed before it is carried out. Also clarify what “making good” means: plaster ready for painting is a different finish from a fully decorated room.
Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily. Many surrounds are sold separately from the appliance, hearth and interior components. Check the product description and selected options rather than relying on the display photograph.
Sometimes. The new surround must be suitable for the existing appliance and installation. Dimensions, material suitability and the condition of the existing components all need checking first.
Yes. Electric fireplaces provide one option, while some gas and wood burning installations can use a purpose designed flue arrangement. The feasible choices and costs depend on the appliance and property; our team can help assess the options.
Only when the listing or quotation explicitly includes it. A product marked “surround” or “suite” should not be assumed to include installation. Bonfire offers both supply only purchases and a separately specified installation service.
We can discuss an initial estimate using details of your property and proposed design. A survey may be needed to confirm suitability, scope and final pricing. Any survey charge will be explained when arranging it.
