British-Made Nu-Flame Gas Fires

Nu-Flame is a family-run British fireplace manufacturer with more than 30 years of experience producing gas and electric fires. Its appliances are designed, engineered and manufactured at the company’s factory in Surrey.

Nu-Flame is particularly well known for realistic fuel-effect gas fires that recreate the appearance of a traditional coal or log fire while providing the convenience of gas and a choice of modern control systems.

Bonfire is an authorised Nu-Flame supplier and can help with appliance selection, fireplace compatibility, flue requirements and professional Gas Safe installation.

Nu-Flame Energis Hotbox

The Nu-Flame Energis Hotbox is an open-fronted high-efficiency gas fire designed for customers who want a realistic traditional flame picture combined with useful room heating.

Current manufacturer specifications list a heat output of approximately 4.25kW on both natural gas and propane, with net efficiency around 67%.

The Hotbox can be used in a conventional fireplace or as a hole-in-the-wall installation, depending on the selected trim and installation arrangement.

Key features include:

  • Realistic open-fronted coal-effect fire
  • Natural gas and propane versions
  • Approximately 4.25kW heat output
  • Class 1, Class 2 and suitable pre-cast flue compatibility
  • Choice of trim styles and finishes
  • Different control options
  • Fireplace or hole-in-the-wall installation formats

The Bonfire model currently offered uses Nu-Flame’s three-button fully sequential control, providing convenient control without changing the traditional open-fire appearance.

Nu-Flame Evolution Plus

The Evolution Plus takes a different approach. It is primarily a decorative fuel-effect burner designed to reproduce the appearance of a traditional open fire within an existing fireplace, cast insert, fire basket or bespoke opening.

Standard tapered inset versions are available for traditional 16-inch and 18-inch fireplace openings, while Nu-Flame also manufactures made-to-measure Evolution Plus burners for less conventional installations.

This makes the range particularly useful when restoring a period fireplace where a modern standard-size gas fire would spoil the proportions or appearance.

Made-to-Measure Gas Fires

One of the strongest reasons to consider Nu-Flame is its ability to manufacture an Evolution Plus burner around the fireplace rather than forcing the fireplace to fit a standard appliance.

Made-to-measure burners can be produced for applications including:

  • Traditional fire baskets
  • Hob grates
  • Victorian cast-iron inserts
  • Arched fireplaces
  • Contemporary sunken burners
  • Unusual or oversized fireplace openings

Available fuel effects include coal, logs, driftwood, pebbles and crushed rock, depending on the specification.

Control options can include manual operation, wall controls and fully sequential remote control.

Natural Gas or LPG?

Selected Nu-Flame gas fires are available for either natural gas or LPG/propane.

This can make Nu-Flame suitable for properties without a mains-gas connection, provided the appliance is specifically manufactured for LPG and the complete installation is designed accordingly.

The gas type must be confirmed when ordering because a natural-gas appliance should not simply be connected to LPG without the correct manufacturer-approved conversion or specification.

Which Flue Does a Nu-Flame Fire Need?

The required flue depends on the exact Nu-Flame model.

Evolution Plus burners can work with Class 1 or Class 2 flues depending on the burner size and specification. Nu-Flame’s Energis Hotbox is also designed for several conventional flue types, including suitable pre-cast systems.

The chimney or flue should therefore be checked before ordering rather than selecting the fire solely from the dimensions of the fireplace opening.

If an existing chimney has previously been used for solid fuel, it should be swept and assessed before the gas appliance is installed.

Open-Fronted or Glass-Fronted Gas Fire?

Nu-Flame manufactures both formats across its wider range.

An open-fronted fire provides a more direct and traditional flame appearance, particularly for period fireplaces and realistic fuel beds.

A glass-fronted gas fire generally allows greater control over combustion and can achieve higher efficiencies because the combustion chamber is more enclosed.

The right choice depends on whether your priority is traditional flame appearance, heating performance or the installation conditions within the property.

Nu-Flame Installation by Bonfire

Gas fires must be installed by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Bonfire can provide a complete gas fire survey and installation service, including:

  • Fireplace and appliance measurement
  • Gas-fire specification
  • Existing chimney and flue assessment
  • Gas supply requirements
  • Fireplace alterations where required
  • Professional Gas Safe installation
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Aftercare and servicing

Why Buy Nu-Flame from Bonfire?

Bonfire works closely with Nu-Flame and can help match the fire to the fireplace rather than treating the appliance as a standard box product.

This is particularly useful with Evolution Plus burners, where fireplace dimensions, fuel effect, control type, gas type and flue all affect the final specification.

Our showroom near Reading, Berkshire also allows customers to discuss gas-fire options and fireplace alterations with our experienced team before ordering.
