Newman Fireplaces, Beams & Electric Fires

Newman Fireplaces is a family-run British fireplace company with manufacturing roots dating back to 1929. Its collection covers natural-stone fireplace surrounds, complete suites, realistic timber-effect beams, chambers, stoves and modern E-Ferno electric fires.

Bonfire has worked with Newman Fireplaces for over 10 years and supplies a substantial collection online, with professional fireplace and stove installation available across our service area.

For many Bonfire customers, the strongest reason to consider Newman is the ability to create the complete visual fireplace around the appliance rather than choosing the stove or fire in isolation.

Newman Non-Combustible Timber-Effect Beams

Newman’s timber-effect beams reproduce the character of aged oak without using a conventional combustible timber mantel.

Many designs are moulded from original historic timbers. The Bideford, for example, was reproduced from an approximately 300-year-old Devon barn beam, while the Fowey takes its character from a 17th-century Cornish barn beam.

Popular Bonfire models include:

  • Bideford – balanced proportions with detailed aged-oak character
  • Clovelly – substantial traditional beam styling
  • Dartmoor – deeper rustic appearance
  • Netherton – versatile traditional timber effect
  • Fowey – taller, heavily textured barn-beam appearance
  • Telford – more compact beam proportions
  • Stoneleigh – stone-effect alternative to the oak finishes

Most oak-effect models are available in light oak and dark oak, allowing the beam to coordinate with flooring, furniture and other timber finishes.

Standard or Bespoke Fireplace Beam?

Newman offers standard beam widths across many designs, typically covering the most common fireplace proportions. Selected models can also be manufactured in special sizes where a standard length does not suit the chimney breast or stove chamber.

The Bideford, for example, is offered in standard widths from approximately 1070mm to 1500mm, with special widths available up to around 2159mm subject to specification.

Bespoke sizing is especially useful for:

  • Wide chimney breasts
  • Large stove chambers
  • Asymmetrical fireplace designs
  • Projects requiring the beam to align with surrounding joinery
  • Replacing an unusually sized original mantel

Using a Newman Beam Above a Wood Burner

A timber-effect beam should still be treated as part of the complete fireplace installation rather than positioned purely by appearance.

Newman specifies minimum clearances and fitting requirements for its beam products, and the selected stove will also have its own clearance requirements. The final position should therefore consider:

  • Stove heat output
  • Distance above and beside the appliance
  • Beam dimensions
  • Wall and fireplace construction
  • Fixing method
  • Manufacturer fitting guidance

Newman states that its fire-resistant beam collection can be used with compatible closed-burning wood, multi-fuel and gas stoves, as well as freestanding electric stoves, subject to the required clearances.

Bonfire can specify the beam alongside the stove, hearth and chamber as part of a complete fireplace installation.

Newman Limestone Fireplaces

Newman also produces a substantial range of natural-stone fireplace surrounds and complete suites.

Current Bonfire designs include Algarve, Viana, Faro, Estoril, Tudor, Mertola, Cotswold, Catalonia and Galiza, with materials including Portuguese Limestone, Bella Crème Limestone and Medistone.

Some models are sold as the surround alone, while complete suites can include coordinating hearths and slips. This can make specification simpler where the customer wants a ready-matched fireplace package rather than selecting every stone component separately.

Natural stone varies in shade, veining, fossils and markings. Newman specifically advises that these variations are inherent characteristics of the material rather than defects.

Newman E-Ferno Electric Fires

The E-Ferno collection provides a completely different side to Newman.

The current range includes Azar FD full-depth fires, Egan SL slimline fires, Alinta inset fires, Phoenix electric stoves and complete flat-wall fireplace suites.

Azar FD models are available in several widths and can be installed with one, two or three viewing sides, making them suitable for conventional feature walls, corner layouts and three-sided media-wall designs.

Features on the current Azar range include:

  • 15 flame colours
  • 15 ember-bed colours
  • Independent downlighting
  • Real kiln-dried hardwood log sets
  • Remote and app control
  • Multiple flame speeds
  • Integrated crackling sounds
  • 1kW and 2kW heating settings

Because these are electric fires, they require no conventional chimney or gas supply, giving significantly more flexibility over installation position.

Newman Fireplace Installation by Bonfire

Bonfire can supply individual Newman products or design the complete fireplace around them.

Our service can include fireplace measurement, hearths, chambers, beam specification, stone surrounds, electric fires, wood-burning stoves, chimney liners, twin-wall flue systems and professional installation.

For solid-fuel installations, natural-stone hearths and back panels may need to be sectioned to accommodate thermal expansion rather than installed as single decorative slabs. Newman specifically highlights this requirement in its product guidance.

Newman Fireplaces FAQs

Are Newman fireplace beams real wood?

No. The timber-effect beam collection reproduces the appearance of aged wood using fire-resistant materials, allowing the designs to be used in suitable stove installations where genuine timber may be less appropriate.

Can Newman beams be made to measure?

Selected Newman beams can be produced in special widths. The maximum available size varies by design, so check the individual product before ordering.

Can a Newman beam be installed above a wood burner?

Yes, subject to the beam’s fitting instructions, the stove manufacturer’s clearance requirements and correct installation. The final position should be specified around the complete fireplace.

Does Newman make natural-stone fireplaces?

Yes. Newman offers limestone and stone fireplace surrounds and complete suites in traditional and contemporary designs.

What is Newman E-Ferno?

E-Ferno is Newman’s electric-fire collection, including Azar full-depth fires, Egan slimline models, Alinta inset fires, Phoenix electric stoves and complete fireplace suites.

Do Newman electric fires need a chimney?

No. E-Ferno electric fires require a suitable electrical supply but do not need a conventional chimney or gas connection.

Can Bonfire install Newman fireplaces and beams?

Yes. Bonfire can incorporate suitable Newman beams, surrounds and electric fires into complete fireplace installations, including hearths, chambers, stoves and associated chimney work where required.
