Hunter Stoves – British Stove Design Since the 1970s

Hunter Stoves is a long-established British stove manufacturer with roots dating back to the early 1970s. Today, the Hunter Stoves Group designs and manufactures wood-burning, multi-fuel and gas appliances, supported by its engineering and product-development teams in the UK.

Bonfire is an official UK Hunter distributor, supplying a focused collection of Hunter wood burners, gas stoves and electric fires with optional professional installation.

The current Bonfire range includes everything from compact 4.9kW Herald models to large traditional stoves, contemporary Halo designs and convenient gas and electric alternatives.

Hunter Herald Wood Burning Stoves

The Herald is one of Hunter’s best-known stove families and remains a strong choice for customers wanting traditional styling without buying an outdated appliance design.

The Herald 4 Eco has a nominal output of approximately 4.9kW, making it particularly relevant to many smaller and medium-sized UK living rooms.

The Herald 5 Eco provides greater capacity and is available with either a single or double door, while the Herald 5 Slimline Eco retains the traditional appearance but reduces the depth to suit shallower fireplace openings.

For properties with substantially greater heat requirements, the Herald 8 and Herald 14 provide larger fireboxes and higher outputs. These should be selected according to calculated heat loss rather than simply choosing the biggest stove that fits the fireplace.

Single Door or Double Door Herald?

One unusual advantage of the Herald range is the choice between single and double-door configurations on selected models.

A single large door creates a cleaner uninterrupted view of the flames, while twin doors retain more of the traditional appearance associated with older farmhouse and country-style stoves.

The heating performance may be similar, so this decision is largely about the proportions of the fireplace and the style you want to create.

Hunter Herald Allure

The Herald Allure range provides a more contemporary interpretation of the traditional Hunter stove.

Current Bonfire models include the Allure 4, 5 and 7, giving customers a progression of sizes while retaining the same broad design language. Large viewing windows place more emphasis on the flames, while the cleaner body design works well in both renovated period properties and more modern interiors.

The Allure range is also among Hunter’s cleaner-burning stove families, with current models meeting Ecodesign requirements and selected appliances achieving high ClearSkies ratings.

Hunter Halo Radial 5

The Halo Radial 5 is deliberately different from Hunter’s traditional ranges. Its rounded body and large curved appearance create a more Scandinavian-style freestanding stove, while its nominal output of approximately 4.9kW makes it suitable for many typical living spaces.

Bonfire currently lists the Radial at approximately 84% efficiency, making it an option for customers who like Hunter’s engineering but want a more contemporary centrepiece than a Herald.

Hunter Gas Stoves

Hunter also offers gas versions for customers who prefer real flames without loading and storing logs.

The current Bonfire collection includes Aspect 4 and Aspect 7 gas stoves for a cleaner contemporary look, alongside more traditional Consort, Hawk and Herald designs.

Selected models are available for natural gas or LPG, which can make them relevant to properties without a mains-gas connection where a suitable LPG installation is available.

Gas stove specification should include the fuel supply, appliance output and flue arrangement. A Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out the installation.

Hunter Electric Fires

The Hunter EF50, EF60 and EF72 provide a completely different option within the range.

These wide electric fires offer approximately 1–2kW of supplementary heat, app and remote control and a realistic log-effect fuel bed. They require no conventional chimney or gas supply, making them suitable for feature walls, media walls and rooms where installing a real-flame appliance is impractical.

DEFRA Exemption, Ecodesign & ClearSkies

Hunter offers a substantial number of modern solid-fuel appliances that are DEFRA-exempt for use with specified fuels in UK Smoke Control Areas and compliant with Ecodesign requirements.

Selected Hunter ranges also carry ClearSkies certification. For example, Hunter states that its Aspect range and selected Allure appliances have achieved ClearSkies Level 5.

Certification should always be checked against the exact model before purchase rather than assumed across every Hunter appliance.

Choosing the Correct Heat Output

Hunter’s range spans compact models around 5kW through to appliances designed for much larger rooms.

Choosing purely by fireplace width can result in an oversized stove. Insulation, glazing, room volume, ceiling height, external walls and adjoining spaces all affect the actual heat requirement.

You can use our stove calculator for an initial estimate before discussing the final specification with our team.

Hunter Stoves FAQs

Where are Hunter Stoves from?

Hunter Stoves is a British stove manufacturer whose history dates back to the early 1970s. The modern Hunter Stoves Group is headquartered in Exeter and has UK engineering and manufacturing operations.

What is the difference between the Herald 5 and Herald 5 Slimline?

The Herald 5 Slimline has reduced depth, making it particularly useful for shallower fireplace openings while retaining the traditional Herald appearance and an output around the popular 5kW level.

Are Hunter stoves DEFRA-exempt?

Many current Hunter wood-burning and multi-fuel models are DEFRA-exempt, but exemption applies at individual model level. Check the exact appliance before ordering.

Does Hunter make gas stoves?

Yes. Hunter produces traditional and contemporary gas stoves including Aspect, Consort, Hawk and Herald models, with natural gas and LPG options available on selected appliances.

Does Hunter make electric fires?

Yes. The current Hunter electric range includes EF50, EF60 and EF72 fires with app and remote control and approximately 1–2kW of supplementary heating.

Can a Hunter wood burner be installed without an existing chimney?

Potentially. A professionally designed insulated twin-wall flue system can often create the required chimney where a suitable masonry chimney is not available.

Can Bonfire install my Hunter stove?

Yes. Bonfire can provide surveys, hearths, chimney and flue work and professional HETAS or Gas Safe installation depending on the appliance.
