Focus Creation
Shop Focus Creation suspended fireplaces from Bonfire, an official UK distributor. Handmade in France, Focus is internationally recognised for sculptural fireplaces that suspend the fire from the ceiling and make it part of the architecture.
Bonfire’s current collection centres on the iconic Gyrofocus: the glazed 18kW Ecodesign wood-burning model for contemporary interiors and the outdoor Gyrofocus for covered terraces and exterior living spaces. Both retain the distinctive 1.25m circular body and 360° pivoting design created by Dominique Imbert.

Focus Creation Suspended Fireplaces
Focus Creation is a French designer and manufacturer best known for suspended fireplaces that transform the fire from a conventional wall feature into a sculptural element within the room.
Its most recognisable design is the Gyrofocus, created by Dominique Imbert in 1968. Suspended from above and able to rotate through 360°, it helped establish an entirely new approach to fireplace design in which the fire could occupy the centre of the room rather than being fixed permanently against a wall.
Bonfire is an official UK Focus Creation distributor. Our current online collection concentrates on two versions of this design: the Gyrofocus Glazed wood burner and the Gyrofocus Outdoor.
Gyrofocus Glazed – The Icon Updated for Modern Wood Burning
The original Gyrofocus used an open firebox. The current Gyrofocus Glazed retains the same sculptural form and 360° rotation while enclosing the fire behind curved glass.
This allowed Focus to retain the character of the original design while bringing the appliance into its modern Ecodesign heating collection.
Current specifications include:
- 18kW nominal heat output
- 81% efficiency
- 1,250mm body diameter
- 360° pivoting firebox
- Curved glazed combustion chamber
- Matt-black finish
- Ecodesign-compliant wood combustion
At 18kW, this is a substantial heating appliance. It is primarily suited to large open-plan rooms, vaulted spaces and properties with significant heat demand rather than a conventional small living room.
A Fireplace Designed for the Centre of the Room
The biggest difference between Gyrofocus and a conventional freestanding stove is its relationship with the architecture.
Because the fireplace is suspended and can pivot, it can sit centrally within a room and direct the view of the fire towards different seating areas.
This makes it particularly effective in:
- Large open-plan living spaces
- Double-height and vaulted rooms
- Contemporary extensions
- Architect-designed homes
- Hotels and hospitality projects
- Rooms where a conventional chimney breast would interrupt the layout
The flue becomes part of the visual design, creating a strong vertical connection between the fireplace and ceiling.
Gyrofocus Outdoor
The Gyrofocus Outdoor takes the same 1.25m suspended circular design into exterior spaces.
It remains a 360° pivoting wood-burning fireplace, allowing the opening to be turned towards different seating areas as the terrace is used.
Focus currently offers outdoor versions in finishes including black and naturally weathered rusted steel.
The outdoor model should not simply be installed in an exposed garden and treated like a conventional fire pit. Focus specifies installation conditions for its warranty, including positioning the fireplace under cover, connecting it to an appropriate flue terminal with rain protection and maintaining the manufacturer’s required distance from coastal environments.

Planning a Suspended Focus Fireplace
A Gyrofocus should be considered early in the design process rather than added after the room has been completed.
The installation needs to account for:
- Ceiling and structural support
- Finished fireplace height
- Flue route and terminal position
- Combustible clearances
- Hearth and floor protection
- Room heat requirement
- Ventilation
- Access for installation
- Chimney sweeping and maintenance
Its physical scale should also be considered carefully. With a diameter of 1.25 metres, Gyrofocus requires enough surrounding space to look proportionate and to meet the required installation clearances.
Why Is the Gyrofocus So Well Known?
The Gyrofocus has become one of the most recognisable fireplace designs in the world. Focus states that the design has been exhibited in international contemporary-art museums, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and has received major international design recognition.
Its longevity comes from a combination of unusually simple geometry, suspension and the ability to rotate the entire hearth rather than treating the fireplace as a fixed architectural object.

Focus Creation FAQs
Where are Focus Creation fireplaces made?
Focus fireplaces are manufactured in France and are known particularly for their sculptural suspended metal fireplace designs.
Does the Gyrofocus rotate?
Yes. Both current Gyrofocus models sold by Bonfire can pivot through 360°, allowing the fireplace to be oriented towards different parts of the room or terrace.
How powerful is the Gyrofocus Glazed?
The current glazed wood-burning Gyrofocus has a nominal heat output of approximately 18kW and efficiency of around 81%, making it suitable primarily for substantial spaces.
Is the Gyrofocus Ecodesign compliant?
Yes. The current glazed wood-burning model was developed as an enclosed version of the original Gyrofocus and forms part of Focus Creation’s Ecodesign heating collection.
Can the Gyrofocus be installed outdoors?
Focus produces a dedicated outdoor Gyrofocus. It has specific installation and warranty requirements, including sheltered positioning and an appropriate flue termination.
Can Bonfire install a Focus suspended fireplace?
Yes. Bonfire can coordinate the fireplace, supporting structure, hearth and chimney system and provide professional installation for suitable Focus Creation projects.
