Ecofan Heat-Powered Stove Fans
Ecofan is the original Canadian-made heat-powered stove fan, designed to move warm air away from the immediate area around a stove and further into the room.
Unlike an electric fan, an Ecofan does not plug into the mains and does not require batteries. It generates its own electricity from the temperature difference between the hot stove surface and the cooler fins at the top of the fan.
Bonfire currently stocks eight genuine Ecofan models, ranging from the compact Original Mini to the high-output AirMax DUO.
Which Ecofan Do I Need?
The most important factor is not simply the size of your stove. It is the surface temperature where the Ecofan will sit.
| Ecofan | Airflow | Operating Temperature | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Mini 815 | Compact output | Approx. 110–345°C | Limited space above smaller stoves |
| Original 800 | Up to 100 CFM | 110–345°C | Entry-level wood-stove fan |
| UltrAir 810 | Up to 125 CFM | 100–345°C | Mid-range airflow |
| AirMax 812 | Up to 175 CFM | 85–345°C | High airflow and cooler starting temperature |
| AirMax DUO 814 | 200+ CFM | Check model specification | Maximum Ecofan airflow |
| AirDeco 8203 | 160 CFM | 65–345°C | Contemporary design and low start temperature |
| AirDeco 8204 | 190 CFM | 70–345°C | Higher-output contemporary fan |
| BelAir 806 | Approx. 140 CFM | 75–200°C | Lower-temperature gas and pellet stove tops |
CFM means cubic feet of air moved per minute. A higher figure means greater air movement, but the highest-output model is not automatically the correct choice if your stove surface operates outside its required temperature range.
How Does an Ecofan Work Without Electricity?
Inside an Ecofan is a thermoelectric module.
The base of the fan becomes hot from contact with the stove while the upper cooling fins remain comparatively cool. This temperature difference generates a small electrical current that powers the fan motor.
As the stove becomes hotter, the fan generally turns faster and moves more air. As the stove cools, the fan slows naturally.
There is therefore no thermostat to switch on, no batteries to replace and no mains cable running across the fireplace.
Ecofan AirMax DUO 814 – Maximum Airflow
The AirMax DUO 814 is currently the highest-performing Ecofan in the Bonfire collection.
It uses two thermoelectric modules together with a revised blade and motor design to produce more than 200 CFM of airflow.
This makes it particularly relevant to larger rooms and installations where moving the maximum amount of warm air away from the stove is the priority.
Its base is also considerably wider than a standard Ecofan, so check that there is enough flat stove-top space before ordering.
Ecofan AirDeco 8203 & 8204
The AirDeco range combines higher performance with a more contemporary appearance.
The AirDeco 8203 produces approximately 160 CFM and begins operating at lower stove-top temperatures than many traditional Ecofan models.
The larger AirDeco 8204 increases airflow to approximately 190 CFM.
These are strong choices where you want modern styling and high airflow without moving to the larger dual-module AirMax DUO.
Ecofan AirMax 812 vs UltrAir 810
The AirMax 812 is the stronger performer of the two.
It can produce approximately 175 CFM and operates from a lower stove-top temperature of around 85°C.
The UltrAir 810 produces approximately 125 CFM and is designed for stove-top temperatures from around 100°C.
For a larger room or where greater circulation is required, AirMax is generally the better choice. UltrAir provides a useful middle ground between the entry-level Original and the higher-performance models.
Ecofan Original 800 & Original Mini 815
The Original 800 is the entry-level full-size Ecofan and moves up to approximately 100 CFM.
It requires a hotter stove surface than AirMax or AirDeco, beginning its useful operating range at approximately 110°C.
The Original Mini 815 is designed primarily for restricted spaces. At approximately 165mm high, it is the smallest Ecofan and can fit where clearance above the stove is limited.
Ecofan BelAir 806 – For Lower Stove-Top Temperatures
The BelAir 806 is different from the main wood-stove Ecofan range.
It is designed to operate at lower surface temperatures of approximately 75–200°C, making it particularly suited to compatible gas and pellet stoves whose top surfaces do not normally reach the temperatures produced by a conventional steel or cast-iron wood burner.
Do not substitute a standard high-temperature Ecofan without first checking the actual stove-top temperature.
Does an Ecofan Make a Stove More Efficient?
An Ecofan does not create additional heat and does not alter the combustion efficiency rating of the stove itself.
Its job is to redistribute existing warm air more effectively into the occupied part of the room instead of allowing as much heat to remain concentrated around the appliance or rise directly towards the ceiling.
Manufacturer testing has shown that improved heat distribution can allow users to achieve equivalent thermal comfort while reducing fuel consumption under controlled conditions, with tested reductions of up to approximately 18% on selected models.
Where Should an Ecofan Be Positioned?
Place the Ecofan on a smooth, flat section of the stove top, normally towards the side or rear where it can draw cooler room air through its cooling fins.
Do not position it directly in front of the flue pipe or on an area that exceeds the model’s maximum operating temperature.
A stove-top thermometer is useful for checking that your chosen position remains within the correct temperature range.
Can an Ecofan Overheat?
Yes. Most standard wood-stove Ecofans have a maximum operating temperature of approximately 345°C.
Operating above the permitted temperature can damage the thermoelectric module, motor or wiring and may invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
If the stove top becomes too hot, move the Ecofan to a cooler permitted position or remove it safely once appropriate to do so in accordance with the instructions.
Genuine Ecofan Replacement Parts
One advantage of buying a genuine Ecofan is the availability of replacement components.
Replacement blades and motor kits are available for several models, so a fan that has seen years of use does not necessarily need to be discarded if the motor eventually slows or a blade is damaged.

Ecofan FAQs
Do Ecofans need electricity?
No. Ecofans generate their own electricity using the temperature difference between the hot stove base and the cooler upper heat sink.
Which Ecofan moves the most air?
The AirMax DUO 814 is currently the highest-output model in the Bonfire range, producing more than 200 CFM.
Which Ecofan starts at the lowest temperature?
Among the current wood-stove models, the AirDeco 8203 operates from approximately 65°C. The correct model should still be selected against the complete operating-temperature range of the stove.
What is the difference between AirMax 812 and UltrAir 810?
AirMax 812 produces more airflow at approximately 175 CFM and starts operating at a lower temperature. UltrAir 810 produces approximately 125 CFM and provides a lower-cost mid-range alternative.
Which Ecofan is best for a gas stove?
The BelAir 806 is specifically designed for lower-temperature stove tops and is intended for compatible gas and pellet stove applications.
Does an Ecofan actually save fuel?
An Ecofan does not change the combustion efficiency of the appliance. Independent manufacturer testing found that improved heat circulation could allow equivalent thermal comfort with lower fuel consumption under controlled test conditions, with savings varying by model and installation.
Where should I put an Ecofan on my stove?
Place it on a suitable flat part of the stove top, generally towards the side or rear where cooler room air can reach the heat sink. Keep it away from excessively hot areas and follow both the stove and Ecofan instructions.
