Norwegian Jøtul Wood Burning Stoves

Jøtul has produced stoves and fireplaces since 1853, making it one of the world’s longest-established stove manufacturers. The brand is particularly associated with Norwegian cast-iron construction, combining traditional manufacturing experience with modern clean-burning technology.

Why Jøtul Uses Cast Iron

Cast iron is central to Jøtul’s identity. The material is highly resistant to heat and repeated temperature changes, while individual cast components can be replaced rather than requiring the complete stove to be discarded.

It also allows Jøtul to create the decorative detailing seen on its traditional models as well as the cleaner forms used across its contemporary ranges.

Traditional or Contemporary Jøtul?

One of Jøtul’s strengths is that the range does not follow a single design style.

Models such as the F100, F200, F400 and F500 draw heavily on traditional cast-iron stove design, making them particularly suited to period properties, cottages and more classical fireplace settings.

The F130, F160, F300 and F370 families provide a more contemporary Scandinavian appearance, with cleaner lines and larger areas of glass.

Popular Jøtul Stoves

Jøtul F200

The Jøtul F200 combines traditional cast-iron styling with modern combustion technology. Its nominal 5kW output makes it particularly relevant to many medium-sized UK living rooms.

Different leg heights allow the proportions to be adjusted to suit the fireplace, while the large horizontal door provides a generous view of the fire. The F200 is also DEFRA-exempt for use in Smoke Control Areas when operated in accordance with its exemption.

Jøtul F373 Advance

The Jøtul F373 Advance represents the more contemporary side of the Jøtul range. Glass on three sides gives a broad view of the fire, making it particularly effective when the stove is installed prominently within a room rather than deep inside a fireplace recess.

Its nominal output is approximately 6kW, so the room’s actual heating requirement should be considered before choosing it purely for its appearance.

Jøtul F400 & F500

For larger spaces, Jøtul offers substantial traditional cast-iron appliances.

The Jøtul F400 ECO has a nominal output of around 7kW and accommodates logs up to approximately 50cm long. It is also currently on display at our Reading showroom.

The F500 ECO is larger again, with a nominal output close to 9kW. These models can suit substantial rooms but would generally be excessive for a smaller or well-insulated living space.

Jøtul Inset Wood Burning Fires

Jøtul also produces inset wood-burning fires for customers who prefer a fireplace integrated into the chimney breast.

Models such as the C24, i520 and i620 provide different dimensions and outputs, making them suitable for fireplace renovations and new built-in features.

The complete opening, hearth, ventilation and chimney should be specified around the selected insert before construction begins.

What Size Jøtul Stove Do I Need?

Jøtul covers a particularly broad output range. Compact models can suit lower-energy homes, while larger F400 and F500 appliances are designed for rooms requiring considerably more heat.

Room dimensions alone are not enough to choose correctly. Insulation, glazing, ceiling height, property age and adjoining spaces should also be taken into account.

Oversizing a cast-iron stove can make the room uncomfortably warm and encourage the fire to be run below its intended operating level.

DEFRA & Ecodesign

Selected current Jøtul stoves are DEFRA-exempt and suitable for burning specified fuel in UK Smoke Control Areas. However, this should always be checked at individual model level.

Current Jøtul ranges also include appliances designed to meet modern Ecodesign emissions requirements. DEFRA exemption and Ecodesign compliance are separate considerations.
