The RB73 Fennek 50 outdoor wood burning stove is a modular fire designed by Dutch designer Roderick Vos, with a choice of three or four glass sides to suit different terrace and garden layouts. Its construction uses clearly expressed 3mm plate thickness, refractory concrete within the combustion chamber and a CorTen steel flue system, allowing the fireplace to be configured around the required flame view and position.
The Fennek range follows a modular design approach. The Fennek 50 shares its side panels and legs with the larger Fennek 80, while the clean sight lines deliberately leave the thickness of the steel plate visible as part of the design.
A major advantage of the Fennek 50 is the choice of 1, 2, 3 or 4-sided glass configurations. This allows the fireplace to be specified according to where it will sit and from which directions the flames need to remain visible. Closed sides use steel panels, making it possible to balance flame visibility with the orientation of the fireplace within the outdoor space.
Where the rear is closed, a heat-resistant concrete backing stone can be positioned inside the combustion chamber. This helps reduce heat towards the closed rear and encourages more radiant heat towards the open viewing side of the fireplace.
The removable side panels hook into the fireplace and are pressed firmly down into position. They can later be released by pushing them upwards. Air gaps incorporated into the panels allow air to enter the combustion chamber in front of the glass, helping to maintain cleaner viewing windows during use.
The door handle is integrated into the right-hand strip of the door rather than projecting separately from the front. An additional recess in the operating hook allows the door to be opened slightly and secured in that position, which is intended for use when starting the fire.
Inside, the Fennek 50 has a deep firing bottom made from refractory concrete. The flue uses CorTen steel pipes, with the lower section incorporating an adjustable valve that provides some control over the flame picture.
The flue arrangement is designed to help manage rainwater. A 20cm flue stump projects from the fireplace, with the flue pipe fitting over it so water is less likely to enter the firebox through the flue.
At ground level, large cap nuts and stainless steel bolts keep the fireplace raised clear of the terrace surface, helping to avoid direct contact that could otherwise leave rust marks beneath the appliance.
A purpose-designed rain hood completes the flue, with an optional spark catcher available as a retrofit. The compact BloX logstore can also be paired with the Fennek 50, providing space for firewood while also being suitable for use as a seat.

Expert Insight
The choice between three or four glass sides should be based primarily on the position of the fireplace and where the flames need to be visible from. Fewer glazed sides allow parts of the firebox to be closed with steel panels, while three- and four-sided configurations place greater emphasis on viewing the fire from multiple positions around a terrace or seating area.
Suitability
The RB73 Fennek 50 suits contemporary terraces, patios and garden seating areas where the flame view can be configured around the layout. A more enclosed version can work where the fireplace has a defined back or side, while additional glass sides are useful where the fire will be viewed from several directions.
Installation/ Technical Notes
The Fennek 50 can be specified with 1, 2, 3 or 4 glass sides. The fireplace uses a 20cm flue stump with the CorTen flue pipe positioned over it as part of the draining arrangement. The lower pipe incorporates an adjustable valve, while stainless steel bolts within the legs raise the fireplace clear of the terrace surface. An optional spark catcher can be retrofitted to the rain hood.
