Understanding Limestone

Before diving into maintenance tips, let’s first understand the limestone material. Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from the accumulation of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral and shells.

Available in a variety of white shades, some darker than others. Each rock is unique but generally carries characteristics of white with small fossils and minimal dark spots spaced equally around the material.

It is a porous material with a unique texture that enhances the aesthetic appeal of any fireplace surround. However, its porous nature makes it susceptible to damage from spills, stains, and harsh cleaning agents.

Regular Cleaning

Regular cleaning is the cornerstone of maintaining your limestone fireplace surround. Use a soft cloth or a microfiber duster to remove dust and debris from the surface. Avoid using abrasive brushes or scouring pads, as they can scratch the limestone.

Light cleaning and dusting is suggested with a Microfibre cloth unless the material is marked and so other methods will be required.

Gentle Cleansers

When dealing with stains, always opt for gentle cleansers specifically designed for limestone. Avoid using acidic or alkaline cleaners, as they can cause etching and damage to the stone.

Instead, mix a mild detergent with warm water and gently scrub the stained area.

This method is the most common and safest way of cleaning a limestone fireplace surround.

Sealing the Limestone

A limestone fireplace surround doesn’t have to be sealed. However, we would recommend that you seal it after installation to protect and prevent any stains due to the porous material.

Many suppliers and installers do not seal the limestone initially as some people prefer the raw white look of stone. When applying sealant, it can sometimes change the colour of the stone and if not applied correctly will turn the stone blotchy.

Sealing your limestone fireplace surround is essential to protect it from stains and moisture absorption.

Apply a high-quality limestone sealer following the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check the sealant and reapply it as needed to ensure maximum protection.

Handling Spills Immediately

Accidents happen, and spills are inevitable.

When liquids like wine, coffee, or oil spill on the limestone, it is crucial to clean them up immediately. Blot the spill gently with a soft cloth to avoid spreading the liquid and causing further damage.

Avoiding Harsh Chemicals

Steer clear of harsh chemicals or acidic substances near your limestone fireplace surround. These chemicals can penetrate the porous surface and cause irreparable damage. Instead, opt for natural, pH-balanced cleaners to maintain the stone’s integrity.

Removing Stains

In case of stubborn stains, you can create a poultice using flour and hydrogen peroxide. Apply the poultice to the stained area, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit for 24-48 hours. This process helps draw out the stain from the limestone surface.

As a last resort, dependant on how far the stain or mark has penetrated the limestone material, a soft 180-220 grit sand paper can be used to lightly sand the area. Be very careful with this method as you do not want to change the profile or shape of the surround!

Using Trivets and Coasters

To protect your limestone fireplace surround from heat and potential water damage, always use trivets or coasters for placing hot pots, pans, or drinks.

Never place candles on a limestone material as it has the potential to stain. Most likely, when you realise it has stained it will have already leaked into the limestone.

How to remove wax from a limestone fireplace surround

To remove wax from a limestone fireplace surround, follow these steps:

  1. Gently scrape off excess wax: Use a plastic or wooden tool to carefully scrape off any visible or hardened wax from the limestone surface. Avoid using metal tools to prevent scratching the stone.
  2. Use a hairdryer: Set a hairdryer to low heat and aim it at the remaining wax. The heat will help soften the wax, making it easier to remove.
  3. Absorb with paper towels: Place paper towels or an absorbent cloth over the softened wax. Press down gently to let the paper towels soak up the melted wax. Replace the paper towels as needed until no more wax transfers.
  4. Clean with mild detergent: Mix a small amount of mild liquid detergent with warm water. Dampen a soft cloth in the soapy solution and gently wipe the limestone to remove any residual wax or stains.
  5. Rinse with clean water: Dampen another cloth with clean water and wipe the limestone again to remove any soap residue.
  6. Dry thoroughly: Use a dry, soft cloth to dry the limestone completely.

Conduct regular inspections of your limestone fireplace surround to identify any signs of wear or damage. Timely detection allows for prompt repairs, preventing more extensive and costly issues.

Hello. I’ve recently installed a limestone fire surround. In future, I intend to stand a small Everhot electric stove on the hearth. My fireplace installer recommended I place felt furniture pads under the feet of the stove as they are part of the metal construction. What is your opinion?
I notice some of these pads have glue in the construction which alarms me.
I could make my own knitted ‘pads’ out of cotton yarn or wool yarn as an alternative.
Your advice should be greatly appreciated. At present, nothing is on the hearth.
PS: It may take me a while to read any response from you as I only have access to e-mail at a library some distance from my home.
    Regards,
    L. Down (Miss)

  2. Hi Miss L Down, felt furniture pads is a good recommendation.

  3. Do you visit Essex to clean limestone fireplaces. I have a log burner with a cream stone fireplace and I am pretty sure its limestone. However the stone above the door of the log burner is turning a darker colour due to smoke etc. How can I clean that off?

  4. Hi
Part of my limestone hearth has come loose it has plastic and underneath it,
What is the correct thing to use to secure it back down, will normal cement mix soak through the hearth
    Thanks 😊

  5. Hi Phil,

Unfortunatley, we do not offer a cleaning service. We write articles to help with products that we supply and install.

I would contact the person that installed your log burner to assist.

    Kind Regards,
    Max

  6. Hi Catherine,

We would use a solvent free and white adhesive so that it doesn’t soak through.

    Kind Regards,
    Max
