Vlaze Vitreous Enamel for Fireplaces & Outdoor Living
Vlaze is a British-made range of vitreous-enamel products for fireplaces, stoves, kitchens and outdoor living.
Designed and manufactured on the Isle of Wight by A.J Wells & Sons, Vlaze uses steel finished with a glass-like vitreous enamel surface. The enamel is fused to the steel at temperatures exceeding 800°C, creating a hard, non-porous finish that is resistant to heat, weather, stains and everyday wear.
Bonfire supplies the full Vlaze collection, including modular outdoor kitchens, hearths, heat shields, planters and associated outdoor-living products.
What Is Vitreous Enamel?
Vitreous enamel is created by fusing powdered glass onto steel at extremely high temperature.
This creates a smooth, glass-like surface with several practical advantages:
- Heat resistant
- Weather resistant
- Non-porous
- Easy to wipe clean
- Resistant to stains and grease
- Highly colour stable
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
- Available in numerous colours, textures and patterns
Vlaze uses the same specialist enamel manufacturing heritage associated with A.J Wells’ architectural work, including signage and cladding used on major transport networks.
Vlaze ADAPT Outdoor Kitchens
The Vlaze ADAPT collection is a modular outdoor kitchen system manufactured using 304-grade stainless steel with vitreous-enamel panels and work surfaces.
Rather than selling one fixed outdoor kitchen, ADAPT allows the layout to be built from individual modules.
Current options include:
- Storage cabinets
- Drawer units
- Sink modules
- Fridge housings
- Pull-out bin units
- Drop-in grill cabinets
- Slide-in grill cabinets
- Charcoal grill modules
- Corner units
- Freestanding islands
- Dining tables
- Planters
This modular approach means a kitchen can start as a simple cooking and preparation run or develop into a larger L-shaped, island or peninsula arrangement.
60cm, 120cm or Larger ADAPT Modules?
Choosing an outdoor kitchen normally starts with the available space and the appliances you want to integrate.
| Module Type | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| 60cm Modules | Sinks, fridges, drawers, bins and compact storage |
| 120cm Modules | Grills, preparation space and larger storage |
| 240cm / Island Units | Complete cooking and entertaining centres |
| Corner Modules | Creating L-shaped layouts |
Many ADAPT modules are also available on castors, allowing the layout to remain more flexible than a permanently built masonry outdoor kitchen.
Outdoor Kitchen Grill Options
Vlaze ADAPT can be configured around several different types of outdoor cooking appliance.
Current Bonfire options include cabinets for:
- Drop-in gas grills
- Slide-in grills
- Large ceramic charcoal grills such as Big Green Egg
- Freestanding cooking appliances
The grill itself is generally specified separately, so the cabinet dimensions and proposed appliance should be confirmed together before ordering.
Sink, fridge and electrical requirements should also be planned before finalising the kitchen layout.
Vlaze Outdoor Kitchen Packages
For customers who do not want to configure every module individually, Bonfire also offers complete Vlaze kitchen layouts.
Current packages include configurations such as:
- The Long Run – a linear kitchen arrangement
- The Corner – an L-shaped outdoor kitchen
- The Peninsula – cooking and storage with a social return
- The Islands – island-led entertaining layout
- The All Rounder – a larger multi-appliance setup
These provide a useful starting point that can then be adjusted around the garden, cooking appliances and services available.
Vlaze Fireplace Hearths
Vlaze vitreous-enamel hearths provide an alternative to traditional slate, granite, glass or stone beneath suitable freestanding stoves.
Current Bonfire hearths are manufactured from enamelled steel and are typically only around 12mm thick, producing a clean low-profile appearance.
They are available in a broad selection of colours and finishes, allowing the hearth to either disappear visually into the room or become a deliberate design feature.
Because the surface is smooth and non-porous, ash and everyday marks are also easy to wipe away.
Vlaze Heat Shields
A Vlaze heat shield sits behind a freestanding stove and combines wall protection with a decorative enamel finish.
The current range uses a dual-skin construction with an air gap that creates convection behind the panel. This helps reduce heat reaching the wall while returning some of that heat to the room.
Bonfire currently offers sizes including:
- 800 × 1200mm
- 800 × 1800mm
- 1100 × 1800mm
The panels use a rail-mounted fixing system and are available in numerous solid, textured and patterned finishes.
Selected correctly installed heat shields can also reduce the required distance between a stove and a combustible wall, but the exact clearance must be determined from the stove, shield and installation instructions rather than assumed from the panel alone.
Hearth or Heat Shield?
The two products perform different jobs.
A hearth protects the floor beneath and around the stove and creates the required designated fireplace area.
A heat shield protects the wall behind the appliance and may allow reduced clearances in an appropriately tested installation.
Many contemporary stove installations use both, allowing the colour and finish around the appliance to be coordinated.
Colours & Finishes
One of Vlaze’s main design advantages is the range of enamel finishes.
Options extend beyond conventional black and include neutral tones, architectural colours and textured finishes such as graphite, clay, sage, chalk and patterned surfaces.
This allows the same material to work in very different settings, from restrained indoor stove installations to colourful outdoor kitchens.
Why Choose Vlaze for Outdoor Use?
The combination of stainless steel and vitreous enamel is particularly well suited to British outdoor environments.
Vlaze states that its enamel is weatherproof, hygienic, heat resistant and resistant to fading and corrosion. The non-porous surface also prevents grease and dirt being readily absorbed into the finish.
This is valuable in outdoor kitchens where the cabinetry is exposed to changing weather as well as cooking oils, food and regular cleaning.
Vlaze Design & Installation by Bonfire
Bonfire can supply individual Vlaze products or help coordinate them within a wider stove, fireplace or outdoor-living project.
For fireplace installations, we can help specify the hearth and heat shield alongside the stove, flue system and required clearances.
For outdoor kitchens, our team can help plan the module layout, grill position, sink, refrigeration, storage and entertaining space around the available garden dimensions.

Vlaze FAQs
Where is Vlaze made?
Vlaze products are designed and manufactured on the Isle of Wight by British family company A.J Wells & Sons.
What is Vlaze made from?
Vlaze products use steel finished with vitreous or porcelain enamel. The enamel is created by fusing powdered glass to steel at temperatures above 800°C.
Can Vlaze outdoor kitchens stay outside all year?
Yes. The ADAPT range is specifically designed for year-round outdoor use using 304-grade stainless steel and weather-resistant vitreous-enamel surfaces.
Can I build my own Vlaze outdoor kitchen layout?
Yes. ADAPT is modular, allowing storage, sinks, grills, refrigeration, corners and islands to be combined to suit the available space.
What is the difference between a Vlaze hearth and heat shield?
A hearth protects the floor beneath the stove, while a heat shield protects the wall behind it and may permit reduced combustible clearances when correctly specified and installed.
Can a Vlaze heat shield reduce stove clearances?
Yes, in suitable tested installations. The permitted reduction depends on the exact stove, shield and fitting arrangement, so manufacturer guidance must be followed.
Can Bonfire help design my Vlaze outdoor kitchen?
Yes. Bonfire can help configure modules, cooking appliances, sinks, refrigeration, storage and overall layout around the dimensions and intended use of your outdoor space.
