What is a DEFRA Approved stove?
A DEFRA Approved stove is a wood burning stove appliance which has passed the Farming & Rural Affairs criteria which is governed by the UK Department of Environment. The criteria test involves the regulation of emission levels and the amount of smoke a stove appliance emits during a normal operation.
A DEFRA Approved stove is essentially a stove appliance which has been tested and approved to burn specific fuels in a smoke control area that would usually not be allowed – ie. wood.
Smoke controlled areas are parts of the United Kingdom whereby residents are not allowed to emit smoke from their chimneys. DEFRA Approved stove appliances are allowed along with authorised fuel sources.

Smoke controlled areas are mainly highly populated zones such as towns or cities. Your local authorities can help with this information or can be found here. A £1,000 fine can be issued for any persons not abiding by the smoke control regulations.
